Warangal bags ‘Best Heritage City’ award 2014-15
Tourism secretary B Venkatesham and TSTDC managing director Christina Z Chongthu received the awards from Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Union minister for tourism Mahesh Sharma.
The award has also given boost to Warangal’s race to be in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list this year as the former Kakatiya capital was nominated by the state government for the prestigious tag in November last year.
Warangal is also one of the 12 cities in the country selected for the Centre’s Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY). A total of `500 crore has been earmarked for development of tourism facilities along with civic amenities in the 12 selected cities. So, the Kakatiya fort, the thousand pillar temple, Pandavallu Gutta and Mailaram caves among several other tourism sites in the district may get a facelift and better conservation.
The city and district received 1.3 crore tourists in the last two years as against 1.1 crore tourists to Hyderabad during the same period.
